Pedestrian access to London Road

Had a meeting last week with Cllr Mike Jones about this. He was sympathetic.

Thanks to Sarah McHugh for coming along and Ty for providing support and useful information. I’ve posted Mike’s reply below.

    Hi Cath
I am interested in this. Do you have a date for the meeting?

    EMAIL from Mike Jones

    Dear Cath
I found our meeting yesterday to be very helpful in clarifying some of the problems residents in Prestonville / Port Hall have to deal with when walking to the Preston Circus / London Rd area via New England Rd.

As I mentioned yesterday, I am aware that the Junction of Old Shoreham Rd / New England Rd is particularly problematic and, we agree, dangerous. The pedestrian route here is confusing and pedestrians are forced to cross at sections of road where priority for vehicles or walkers is not very clear. Parts of the pavement are very difficult for those with small children, buggies or mobility problems to negotiate. The ‘pigeon poo’ problem and poor lighting under the bridge are further hazards for pedestrians. Network Rail have agreed that they are responsible for preventing pigeons from roosting under the bridge and Council Officers are waiting to hear about when and how this problem is to be addressed.

I agree that in view of the consultation relating to the Seven Dials Roundabout it will be helpful to think about the rail bridge area on New England Rd as another section of road requiring a rethink.

I will also forward the document you sent me to my colleagues from St Peters and North Laine as this section of road borders 2 wards.

Have you received a formal response from traffic planning?

    Green City Councillor

    Preston Park Ward
